Second degree chemical burns and corrosions

An employee was in the process of unloading a rail car. While he was disconnecting a product line hose containing sulfuric acid, residual pressure on the unloading line caused the sulfuric acid to expel and contact the right side of his face, right arm, and waist, causing second degree burns.

An employee was tightening the valve on a 120-liter HDPE tank. The nipple to the valve broke off, releasing the sulfuric acid in the tank. The acid sprayed the employee’s upper chest, arms, thighs, and face. He suffered second-degree burns on the body and third-degree burns on the legs. He was hospitalized.

An employee slipped on the grating of a containment sump and fell. The liquid in the sump splashed on him, causing second-degree chemical (dimethyladamantylamine) burns to his buttocks, hamstrings, and left leg.

An employee was offloading a truck with process fluid. The employee came into contact with the fluid and suffered second-degree burns to the face, neck, and shoulder.

An employee came into contact with hydrofluoric acid vapor while working on a line, suffering a second degree burn to the lower face and neck area.

An employee was adding a bag of sodium thiosulfate to a storage tank containing sodium hypochlorite and a weak caustic solution. The bag fell into the tank and the liquid in the tank splashed onto the employee causing second degree burns to the right and left thigh, abdomen and left hand.

An employee was removing a clamp at a joint in a stainless steel water line that was diluted with peracetic acid when the acid contacted the employee, who received second degree burns to the left shoulder, left chest, and neck, as well as eye and chest irritation.
